10 Heavy Metal Detox Foods

It would probably be true to say that there is not a living human or animal on this planet that does not have some heavy metals in their blood, tissues and organs. Environmental and industrial factors expose you to high levels of heavy metals every day, including the foods you eat and air you breathe. In this article, we will focus on 10 heavy metal detox foods that will help to remove heavy metals from your body. We will also look at a natural “heavy metal detox” that has been backed by research and we know really works.

How We Get Heavy Metals in Our System

Heavy metals are all around us and we come into contact with them through the food we eat, the water we drink, cosmetics, medications, vaccinations, the air that we breathe, pesticides and non-organic foods. We normally take in very small dosages every day, but these accumulate and get stored in the body cells where they can damage the DNA and cause the cell to dysfunction.

Here are the most common heavy metals that we are exposed to, and a brief explanation on how they get into our systems. (12)

Lead: Lead has actually decreased in the environment since the introduction of lead-free fuels, but it is still present and young children tend to be the most vulnerable. Lead can still be found in:

  • Homes built in the 1970’s or before that may contain lead-based paints that can peel and crack and make lead dust that children can breathe in.
  • Certain old water pipes in old buildings or neighbourhoods may contain lead.
  • Lead can be found in some toys and jewellery.
  • Lead is sometimes in candies or traditional home remedies.
  • Certain jobs and hobbies involve working with lead-based products, like stain glass work, which may be introduced into the home.
  • Living near airports or on flight paths may expose a person to lead in the air and from the soil.

The adverse effects on a child’s health have been well-documented and include:

  • Neurological damage to the brain and nervous system
  • Slowed growth and development
  • Learning and behaviour problems
  • Hearing and speech problems
  • Lowered I.Q.
  • Attention deficit problems
  • Performing badly at school

Arsenic: We’re exposed to arsenic through the air we breathe and certain foods, like rice and even infant cereal made from rice. (3) Interestingly, brown or organic rice has twice the amount of arsenic than refined rice, as the arsenic is stored in the bran.

Mercury: Seafood like very large fish that are high on the food chain contain mercury, so it is best to avoid these as the mercury does accumulate over time. These fish include swordfish, shark, tuna, and king mackerel. Other sources would be mercury thermometers that have now been banned, as well as amalgam fillings. (4)

Cadmium: People can be exposed to cadmium that is a problematic heavy metal as once it is in the system if continues accumulating for life. (5) It can be found in rechargeable batteries, tobacco smoke, industries such as metal foundries, and from the soil to fruits and vegetables.

Aluminium: Aluminium is notorious in the atmosphere in the form of nanoparticles, as well as from underarm deodorants, aluminium foil used in the kitchen, as well as from mines and other industries.

Another health stealer – aluminum, a toxic metal, rather than heavy metal can be found in some deodorants, tap water, in some medications, and even in salt and white sugar.

The problem is that we are exposed to all the above every day. Detoxing our bodies from heavy metals and chemicals is something we should think about regularly in order to foster lifelong wellness and health.

The Health Risks of Heavy Metal Exposure

Heavy metals can be toxic and lead to a wide variety of health complications. These are the major health concerns when it comes to heavy metal exposure.

Neurological Disorders: Mercury, Arsenic, Lead and Aluminium can increase your risk of developing brain problems like neurological issues, neurobehavioral disorders, and developmental abnormalities. (6) Aluminum is also linked to neuronal atrophy. (7)

Cancer: Heavy metal exposure may increase your risk of many different forms of cancer, with arsenic directly linked to increasing your risk of multiple cancers, including skin, lung, liver, bladder, kidney, and colon. (8)

Pregnancy Issues: Mercury is a big problem for the developing foetus as even small amounts can grossly affect the developing brain, leading to cognitive problems in later life. (9) It is therefore critical that pregnant mothers avoid eating large fish, and avoid any form of amalgam removal throughout the pregnancy.

Kidney Issues: All environmental heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium are linked to kidney problems. Cadmium exposure is of particular concern for increased risk of chronic kidney disease in those with high blood pressure or diabetes. (10)

Developmental Issues in Kids: We have already mentioned how lead exposure can directly affect the brain in young children and actually lower their I.Q. (11)

Even though authorities stipulate “acceptable” levels of heavy metal intake, there is no safe level of intake, as even in tiny amounts, toxic metals will accumulate in the brain and other organs over time leading to diseases.

10 Foods That Detox Heavy Metals

There are many foods that have been well-researched and shown to actually remove heavy metals from the body. We have chosen 10 different foods here, but there are many more.

  1. Cilantro

Cilantro

Cilantro or Coriander (Coriander sativum) is a powerful heavy metal eliminator and is helpful in removing neurotoxins, such as mercury, from the body. (12)

It is best to use freshly chopped coriander salad with some olive oil and a dash of apple cider vinegar, but AVOID cilantro tincture as this has been shown not to eliminate heavy metals.

  1. Wild Blueberries

BlueberriesBlueberries are superfoods that are very rich in salicylates (natural aspiring) that reduce the damaging effects of inflammation. They are also very high in antioxidants which can help alleviate the free radical damage that heavy metals tend to create in the body. Research has shown that consuming organic wild blueberry extract may help detox heavy metals from the brains’ lymphatics and detoxify the brain by inhibiting a particular protein that blocks the brains’ cleansing process.

  1. Lemon

LemonAdding freshly squeezed lemon juice to a glass of water can keep your body hydrated, which in turn can help flush out toxins. Lemons are also rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, which helps protect your cells from free radical damage.

Research shows that lemon juice is especially helpful in detoxing lead from the body. (1314) One study found that a daily dose of vitamin C reduced the total amount of lead in their blood after just one month of supplementation.

  1. Spirulina

SpirulinaSpirulina is a plant-based superfood, an blue-green algae with anti-inflammatory properties that support the body while detoxing heavy metals. (16) Spirulina can also reduce oxidative stress in the brain, according to animal studies. (17)

Add a teaspoon of bright green spirulina powder to smoothies, or fresh pressed juices.

  1. Chlorella

ChlorellaChlorella is incredibly nutrient-rich algae grown in fresh or saltwater. Like cilantro, chlorella helps the body detox from neurotoxins such as mercury. (18) One study looking at the effects of chlorella extract in mice found protective benefits when used following lead exposure. (19) Another study found that chlorella intake may help counteract heavy metal poisoning in rats when exposed to cadmium by decreasing cadmium absorption in the body. (20)

  1. Garlic

GarlicHerbs like garlic and onions both contain sulphur, which helps in the detoxification pathways of the liver. It can help eliminate arsenic and lead from the body. Garlic promotes the liver to produce detoxification enzymes which help filter toxins from the digestive system.

Garlic can also boost the production of glutathione, the body’s most powerful antioxidant and a critical antioxidant for detoxification. (21)

You can sauté it with vegetables like cauliflower, or spaghetti squash, or adding it to soups, sauces, and stews.

  1. Beets

BeetsBeets have been known to help the liver eliminate toxins. Beets are full of vitamins like B3, B6, and C and minerals like magnesium, calcium, zinc, and iron – all useful for breaking down toxins. A fiber component called betaine in beets promotes digestion to effectively eliminate all the harmful toxins from the body.

One study found that rats given beetroot juice saw an increase in liver detoxifying enzymes, such as glutathione, which are important for the body’s antioxidant defence. (22)

You can steam or roast beets to add to your salads, or simply add some olive oil and a pinch of sea salt, with some cider vinegar if you prefer.

  1. Artichokes

ArtichokesLike beets, artichokes have been shown to support the liver. Animal studies have found that artichoke extracts from the leaves and roots of the plant are protective to the liver cells, as well as helping the liver regenerate. (23)

  1. Turmeric

TurmericThe active compound of turmeric, curcumin, helps protect the body after mercury exposure when consumed regularly. According to animals studies, curcumin reduced the damage to the liver and the kidneys caused by mercury, while also increasing detoxifying liver enzymes such as glutathione levels. (24)

  1. Ginger

GingerGinger is another one of these super anti-inflammatory herbs that can help fight off free radical damage in the body caused by heavy metals.  (25)

You can add fresh ginger to your diet by making a homemade apple, lemon, and ginger juice.

Foods to avoid

Apart from the 10 foods already discussed, it would be good to minimize your heavy metal intake by avoiding foods that are known to be high in certain heavy metals.

These foods would include:

  • Rice, because it often contains arsenic, and brown or organic rice contains twice as much as it is stored in the bran. Avoid feeding babies rice formula too.
  • Large fish high up on the food chain contain more mercury than other fish – tuna, swordfish, bluefin tuna and shark.
  • Certain alcoholic drinks such as non-organic wines can be saturated with pesticide residues full of heavy metals.
  • Non-organic foods are likely to contain heavy metals from the pesticides, fungicides and artificial fertilisers used.

Dr. Georgiou’s Heavy Metal Detox Protocol

I was given an opportunity to research and discover a natural heavy metal detox supplement which is now called HMD (Heavy Metal Detox).

Over a 3-year period and hundreds of tests in a metal foundry in Russia, I was trying to discover a natural heavy metal chelator that could remove not only mercury but many other heavy metals too. I had tried many different natural products that the literature purported to chelate heavy metals, but success was slow as even at 3 years not much was found.

Then a day before traveling back to the metal foundry for more tests, in my dream I saw the 3 bottles that I had on my laboratory bench doing a “merry-go-round” – they were all dancing together in unison. Up to this point I was going to test each of these natural products individually, and it had not occurred to me to mix them all together.

So, I woke up and rushed down to the lab and mixed all the 3 natural products together to form a compound so that I could run more tests on this. As it transpired, this compound upon testing showed that it was capable of detoxifying most of the heavy metals that we tested, including mercury. A natural mercury chelator was born that could also remove many other heavy metals.

Sixteen years later, to this day, I still believe that the dream was Divine Providence, not flute of luck – the universal consciousness was trying to send me a message as I was truly motivated to help humanity from the detrimental effects of heavy metals. I guess my driving force was the fact that I suffered greatly for more than a decade with heavy metal poisoning that resulted in myself being incapacited.

After 16-years of use by many people and practitioners, I am pleased to say that the heavy metal detox protocol that I have developed is now available to all ages and cultures and truly works after proving scientifically in double-blind, placebo-controlled trials.

What is Dr. Georgiou’s Heavy Metal Detox Protocol?

As I have already mentioned, in my dream I saw three bottles dancing together – this compound became the HMD which is now sold worldwide. HMD consists of 3 natural ingredients:

  • Chlorella Growth Factor
  • Homaccord of homeopathic Chlorella at different potencies
  • Cilantro tincture (Coriander sativum)

What was interesting, was that even though I tested each of these ingredients independently, none of them worked on their own. It was only when mixed together in the correct proportions that there was a synergistic effect that resulted in HMD chelating and eliminating many different heavy metals. It really is a unanimous, natural, gentle and safe heavy metal detox supplement.

What Does Dr. Georgiou’s Heavy Metal Detox Protocol Consist of?

This protocol is very simple to use as it consists of 3 separate ingredients as follows – it is sold as the HMD ULTIMATE DETOX PACK:

  1. HMD – this is the main intracellular heavy metal detox chelator that “pulls” metals from inside the cell to the outer mesenchyme. This is a critical part of Dr. Georgiou’s Heavy Metal Detox protocol and it cannot work without the HMD.
  2. HMD ORGANIC CHLORELLA – this is a toxic-free chlorella harvested from the pristine mountain lakes of Taiwan. It helps to “grab” the heavy metals outside the cell and eliminates them from the body.
  3. HMD LAVAGE – this is a “drainage” herbal remedy that helps to open up the elimination channels of the body by helping to upregulate the detoxification pathways of the liver, kidneys and lymphatics, while cleaning the blood.

It is really quite simple to take – here are the adult dosages:

HMD – 45 drops x 3 times daily – add to a little water and drink away from meals

HMD LAVAGE – take 25 drops x 3 times daily – can mix in the same glass as the HMD

HMD ORGANIC CHLORELLA – take 2 caps x 2 times daily, morning and evening, with meals

What are the ingredients of this protocol?

The best way of understanding the ingredients, is to break down the ingredients for each product. Let us begin with the main product HMD:

1. HMD

During the development research on HMD, we tested the 3 ingredients that it contains individually and found that they did not work on their own.

However, when they are all put together in a special ratio, there was a synergy that created a natural toxic metal detox supplement that is now known as HMD.

The research cost $1 million and 3 years of extensive testing to find the unique HMD formula for eliminating heavy metals naturally from the body.

HMD is a truly natural toxic metal detox supplement: It is a synergistic blend of herbal ingredients such as Chlorella Growth Factor, Coriandrum satvium (Coriander) and a homaccord of Chlorella pyrenoidosa.

Details of HMD ingredients:

a)    Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF):

Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) is a steam distillation extract of chlorella pyrenoidosa. Chlorella Pyrenoidosa is a species of freshwater green algae. Chlorella has many health benefits and helps the body to detoxify. In animal studies, it has been shown to remove some toxic metals from the mesenchyme.

b)    Coriandrum Sativum (Cilantro):

Cilantro or Coriandrum sativum is a herb commonly known as coriander. Our Cilantro is a natural tincture made from coriander leaves. It is a vegetable glycerin extract. While cilantro tincture used by itself can actually cause the body to hold on to metals rather than eliminate them, when used in our special synergistic mixture, it has the opposite effect.

c)    Homaccord of Chlorella pyrenoidosa:

A homaccord of Chlorella Pyrenoidosa, freshwater blue-green algae.

See Dosage Guidelines

The total ingredients include:

  • Chlorella Growth Factor
  • Coriandrum sativum
  • Chlorella pyrenoidosa homeoccord
  • Deionised water
  • Vegetable glycerin (no alcohol)

2. HMD ORGANIC CHLORELLA

HMD™ ORGANIC CHLORELLA (Chlorella pyrenoidosa)  is a microscopic, single-celled plant that grows in fresh water and is about the same size as a human blood cell. It multiplies quickly, with a complete reproductive cycle every 20 hours.

Chlorella is a green alga, drawing its colour from an unusually high amount of chlorophyll (more than any other known plant).

Scientists in the 1960’s realised that it was literally impossible for humans to digest chlorella in its natural state due to its tough cell walls that encapsulate its beneficial nutrients.  The cells in HMD ORGANIC CHLORELLA are therefore cracked to open up the cell and make it digestible (cell decimated).

Chlorella contains an amazing amount of essential nutrients: vitamins, macrominerals, trace minerals, essential fatty acids such as GLA, complete proteins, nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), chlorophyll and a vast spectrum of phytochemicals. Actually, scientists have not yet even named all the nutrients found in Chlorella.

Historically, Chlorella was discovered  in 1890 by the Dutch microbiologist, Dr. Beijerinck – he observed the cells under his microscope.

However, chlorella has has been around for aeons –  for billions of years since the beginning of planet Earth.

There are over 20 species of chlorella including C. vulgaris, C. ellipsoidea, C. saccharophila, C. pyrenoidosa and C. regularis.

Chlorella is well known for its ability to “detox heavy metals.”

Animal studies indicate that it’s effective at helping remove toxic or heavy metals and other harmful compounds from the body (91011).

In animals, algae, including chlorella, has been found to weaken the heavy metal toxicity of the liver, brain and kidneys (12).

Furthermore, chlorella has been shown to help lower the amount of other harmful chemicals that are sometimes found in food.

One of these is dioxin, a hormone disruptor that can contaminate animals in the food supply (1415).

HMD™ ORGANIC CHLORELLA is part of Dr. Georgiou’s Heavy Metal Detox protocol, but please note that this is NOT an intracellular chelator – in other words it DOES NOT pull heavy metals from inside the cell, only attaches to what is outside the cell in the matrix or mesenchyme. HMD is the main natural heavy metal chelator that can pull metals from inside the cell to the outside, then chlorella can pick these up and eliminate them from the body.

3. HMD LAVAGE

To further support and enhance the body cleansing process we have also developed the special drainage remedy called HMD LAVAGE.

HMD LAVAGE INGREDIENTS:

HMD LAVAGE has been specially formulated to support the HMD detoxification program. It is a unique, herbal formula that helps to facilitate the drainage of harmful toxins from the body. The word “Lavage” derives from the French for “drainage.” It is taken as a vegetable glycerine tincture that has a very pleasant taste and texture and is liked by all.

Total ingredients include:

  • Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale)
  • Milk Thistle Seed (Silybum marianum)
  • Burdock root (Actium lappa)
  • Red Clover Tops (Trifolium pratense)
  • Turmeric root (Curcuma longa)
  • Hydrangea root (Hydrangea arboresens)
  • Uva ursi leaf (Actostaphylos uva ursi).

Other ingredients include: Deionized water, vegetable glycerin (no alcohol)

See Dosage Guidelines

All of these 3 products are part of Dr. Georgiou’s Heavy Metal Detox Protocol.
