HOW TO REALLY PROTECT YOURSELF FROM NUCLEAR FALLOUT
LATEST NEWS: Nuclear Meltdown Confirmed!
Japanese Officials have now confirmed that a complete meltdown has happened at one of the reactors.
Many weeks after the earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan on March 11, it seems that the worst has happened. Fuel rods in Reactor 1 of the damaged Fukushima plant have melted down completely. Meanwhile ever more radiation is being released into the atmosphere with no end in sight.
On April 12th Japanese authorities raised the crisis level from 5 to 7 – putting the Fukushima accident on par with Chernobyl.
Japan’s nuclear safety commission estimates that the Fukushima plant’s reactors released up to 10,000 terabecquerels of radioactive iodine-131 per hour into the air for several hours after they were damaged. The plant also leaked around 520 tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean. The water contained an estimated 5,000 terabecquerels of radioactive substances, 20,000 times the annual allowable limit for the plant.
What does this all mean?
Opinions diverge. Many officials still claim that radiation levels detected in America and Europe are too low to warrant concern; but CRIIRAD, a French research body on radioactivity said that the risks associated with iodine-131 contamination in Europe are no longer ‘negligible’.
What is certain, however, is that a large amount of radioactivity has been released, and is still being released – thus entering our atmosphere.
Like other forms of pollution, radioactivity attaches to dust and fine particles that can be breathed in or ingested. Winds disperse the material over a larger area, where it is diluted by the Earth’s atmosphere. Rain and snow force more of the radioactive debris to the ground or ocean. Once the radioactive material settles on land and sea, it enters the food chain. Plants and vegetables accumulate radiation rather than dilute it. Animals fed on contaminated vegetation are also affected. Even lower levels of radiation, such as those reaching the US now, accumulate in soil and plants – the fruit and wine growing regions in California are at a particular risk.
After the release of so much radioactive water, we also have to consider oceanic contamination. Aquatic life such as fish incorporates radiogenic material into their body and becomes dangerous to consume. The North Pacific Oceanic Gyre [one of the five major ocean currents] could bring contaminated water from Japan to the West Coast of the US. Fish are often already contaminated with high levels of mercury; in future they may become an even greater threat to our health.
Several countries have already halted Japanese food imports after high radiation levels have been detected in various products.
While the radioactive fallout detected in the US and Europe has not been very concentrated, it will never the less accumulate over time. This is a real cause for concern. While low doses of radiation won’t cause radiation sickness, long-term exposure can lead to the development of many chronic diseases as well as cancer.
The bottom line is that we will have to deal with the consequences of this disaster for a long time and protect ourselves accordingly.
Iodine [or Potassium Iodide] Tablets
Iodine or Potassium Iodide tablets can protect your body from radioactive iodine if you are exposed to larger quantities of radiation – however there are some caveats.
In our bodies, iodine – radioactive or otherwise – is absorbed by the thyroid gland. If exposed to radioactive iodine, the thyroid gland quickly absorbs the radioactive iodine where it can injure or kill the gland and cause thyroid cancer. The point of taking iodine tablets is to saturate the thyroid gland to maximum capacity, so it won’t be able to absorb any radioactive iodine the body may be exposed to. However this only works if iodine is taken shortly before, or immediately after exposure. Iodine clears the thyroid within 24 hours; so taking tablets when no radioactive iodine is present offers no protection and too much iodine can cause negative side effects.
If you want to take iodine we recommend about 100mg/day for a few days to saturate the thyroid gland, followed by a daily maintenance dose of 20mg.

Please also note that iodine tablets won’t actually prevent radioactive iodine entering your body, can’t repair any damage to the thyroid that may already have occurred, and won’t remove any radioactive iodine from your system.
In addition radioactive iodine [iodine-131] is only one of the numerous radioactive particles that are released in the case of nuclear meltdown. Other incredibly harmful substances include cesium-137, strontium-90, plutonium and uranium.
Protect yourself long-term by detoxing your body regularly and using the following remedies:
Ginger, tumeric, ginseng and holy basil (tulsi) have all been documented to protect against some of the damaging effects of radiation.
Ginger, for example, isn’t just a powerful anti-oxidant; studies have also shown its effectiveness in preventing radiation sickness in mice. Research has also shown that ginseng extract facilitates blood count recovery after radiation. In another study holy basil increased the post-radiation survival rates in mice.
So stock up on these herbs or use good quality supplements if you find it difficult to incorporate them into your diet. Green tea is also known for its radio-protective properties, so try to drink a few cups a day.
Chlorella & Spirulina:
Chlorella is an amazing super-food with many health benefits. It not only contains vitamins and minerals but studies have also shown its effect in protecting chromosomal damage from radiation.
Spirulina was given to children after the Chernobyl disaster. A study with 270 children showed that 5 grams of Spirulina per day improved Immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels of radioactive children. IgE is a blood cell that is integral to the functioning of our immune system.
Baking Soda & Detox Baths:
Dr. Marc Sircus recommends using baking soda to diminish radiation effects. Oral administration of baking soda [sodium bicarbonate] has shown to reduce the kidney damage caused be uranium. He also recommends frequent baths using dead sea salt or magnesium bath flakes to further detox the body.
At the time of the Nagasaki bombing in 1945 Dr. Tatsuichiru Akizuki M.D. was Director of the Department of Internal Medicine at the nearby St. Francis’ Hospital. While most of the patients survived the blast they soon began to suffer with symptoms of radiation sickness. In response Dr. Akizuki fed his staff and patients a strict diet of brown rice, miso and tamari soy soup, wakame, kombu and other seaweed, Hokkaido pumpkin and sea salt. He also prohibited the consumption of sugar and sweets. As a result everyone in the hospital survived, while many others in the surrounding areas perished.
While this diet is very strict, it will certainly help to limit your sugar intake and incorporate as many potassium, calcium and mineral rich foods into your diet as possible.You may also want to limit your consumption of fish, milk, and grass fed beef as well as leafy vegetables – since these products are the most prone to radioactive contamination.
